Okay, I couldn't resist. LiveJournal's Question of the Day:
Some people spend their whole lives preparing the answer to this question: What albums are on your personal all-time Top 10 list?

Okay folks, here goes. Now remember, we're thinking albums as a whole, not particular artists or songs. If I had to listen to only 10 *albums* for the rest of my life, they would be (in no particular order, because I can't even fathom choosing between them):

1.) Carbon Leaf, Echo Echo
2.) SR-71, Now You See Inside
3.) Sister Hazel, Chasing Daylight
4.) Gaelic Strom, How Are We Getting Home?
5.) Great Big Sea, Road Rage
6.) Green Day, American Idiot
7.) Blink-182, Enema of the State
8.) Eve 6, Eve 6
9.) John Mayer, Room for Squares
10.) Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stadium Arcadium

That was wicked hard. haha... but, I'd have to say, I'd also give Honorable Mention's to Janis Joplin's Pearl, the Original Broadway Cast Recording of RENT and Shawn Mullins' Soul's Core.

Wow. I started to do that by my favorite songs.... but often, a song I really like is on an album I'm not too fond of as a whole. For example, I totally love "Sleeping With The Lights On" by Teitur.... but, the album as a whole - a bit lackluster.  Very hard. Some of my favorite songs didn't make it to this list at all, under the 'album' criteria. Perhaps tomorrow, I'm going to have to do a top-ten favorite SONGS of all time. *gulp*... okay, maybe top 20?

I came to an interesting realization doing this though. Between compiling my favorite albums list and sort of scrolling through my VAST (I just passed 20K songs!) music collection, I noticed: I generally do NOT like female singers. Sure, there are some songs I like and even some albums... but they were FAR from my top ten, and definitely not evenly weighted in my music collection. It's not that I don't listen to women singers, or have some sort of preconcieved prejudice against them.... but, as a whole, I don't tend to like the tonality.  AND, it's also not because I'm listening to just a particular genre that women are underrepresented in, because as you can see, we're spanning celtic, alt-rock, broadway, etc.
So, I pose this question to you, f-list. Do you think this is because I'm female, that I naturally am more appreciative of the male vocal tones (maybe this is a good argument? My Dad tends to prefer female singers, it would seem...)?
Analyze your music (give me your top 10, if you dare!).... do you find your collections weighted toward a particular gender? If you do, why do you think this is so?

mocha club

Hey, I work with www.mochaclub.org, a non-profit that works in Africa. I saw that you were on the NaBloPoMo list, and we'd love for you to blog about our new campaign on Nov. 24th. The campaign is centered around this idea – at Mocha Club, we have always cared about building an accurate perception of both the challenges that Africans face, and the BEAUTY of Africa. We need bloggers to help get the word out. Please email our director at barrett[at]mochaclub[dot]org if you would be interested in hearing the details!
thanks so much!

My musical tastes are all over the place, but a top
ten albums listing would likely belie this b/c if it
was the whole "trapped on a deserted island" thing i'd likely stick with my own classics.

Basically, i like anything... *except* country, pointing out that altho i don't like jazz, i don't
understand it and am not overly familiar with it.

I'll take a shot tho... i'll do 11 b/c i'm fond of
the number 11. This will likely be lacking in variety tho'.

*"Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" by... the Smashing Pumpkins
*"the White Album (the Beatles)" by... the Beatles
*"Revolver" by... the Beatles
*"Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell
the Truth Shall Live Forever" by... Explosions in the Sky
*"Bee Gees Greatest Hits" by... the Bee Gees
*"In Utero" by... Nirvana
*"Siamese Dream" by... the Smashing Pumpkins
*"Led Zeppelin IV (Zoso)" by... Led Zeppelin
*"New Traditionalists" by... Devo
*"the Foo Fighters" by... the Foo Fighters
*"Antichrist Superstar" by... Marilyn Manson

see? Mostly rock to classic rock to hard rock to post-rock. Tho' if i had more choices i'd like to
slip in something by Mozart, maybe some old Kiss,
something by the Meat Puppets, more Beatles, Devo,
Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins, and some Nine Inch Nails or the Cure. Maybe a mix-tape each from the
60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s... it'd be impossible
to keep it under 30 picks really w/o feeling totally
cheated.
